THE WATER GUARDIANS
long-form investigative multi-media storytelling project
OVERVIEW
The Water Guardians is an investigative photojournalism project examining the mounting pressures facing our waterways across the Northern Rivers and what we must do to bring them back to health.
From blackwater events and fish kills to sick wildlife and declining water quality, the project investigates the major drivers of these changes and what must be done to restore these ecosystems.
Through photography, interviews, narrative writing and potentially a short film (pending funding), the project documents emerging signs of ecosystem stress as well as those working on the ground to directly protect, restore, and regenerate these ecosystems.
Grounded in place and informed by my own lived experience as a resident and long-term documentarian, the work examines how water quality intersects with climate and ecosystem resilience, biodiversity and community wellbeing.
The project focuses on depth over breadth, likely following 3–5 key contributors actively working on solutions across the Northern Rivers, including the Richmond Riverkeepers, Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue, and a small number of scientists and community leaders.
Where appropriate, we will also seek to engage local First Nations water custodians, recognising that meaningful consultation requires time, relationship-building and adherence to cultural protocols.
Documentation will take place across the Northern Rivers, including the Richmond River and its catchment, the Brunswick River, and the coastal environments of Byron Bay and surrounding areas.
As an investigative project, some contributors, locations and story threads will emerge organically through research and relationship-building. This flexibility is essential to developing a nuanced, integrated understanding of both the challenges our waterways face and the solutions already underway.
Photography & participation
Photography, interviews and occasional video may take place as part of The Water Guardians project. At public events, general photography may be undertaken for documentary purposes, with event notices provided where appropriate.
People who are approached for interviews, portraits or more in-depth documentation will be informed about the project and asked for their consent. Contributors and organisations involved more substantially in the project may be invited to sign a separate contributor agreement outlining how their participation and project materials may be used.
